Canning Contour Channel

Postby Aushiker » Mon May 29, 2023 1:04 pm

Canning Contour Channel. I am familiar with the short trail along the channel at Kelmscott (see https://trailswa.com.au/trails/trail/co ... annel-walk), but was curious as to whether anyone has ridden (MTB) or even walked the full 16 km of the trail?

Good to see you're still out there, Andrew. Hadn't heard from you for some time in the various local fora.

This is closer to my neck of the woods, and I'd be up for some short exploratory expeditions.

Had to do a bit more poking around to understand your linked map graphic and just realised it was sourced here: www.roleybushcare.com.au/information/bush-trails/263-canning-contour-channel

Hi Kym.Pleased to hear from you and your interest.

Happy to do a shorter exploratory ride if you wish. I am tied up for the next week (exam next week) but after that happy to arrange something. During the week work for you or weekends only?

I have had a go at roughing out a GPS track relying on Google Satelite and other sources. You can find it at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43065381 ... vlWgC3xrho.

I suggest starting at the northern end as that means a 'downhill' ride back. Maybe to Contour Road if you do not want to do the full track.

If its in the hills I've done it on the gravel bike!

The sections either side of Turner Road are mostly clear/empty to ride in aside from the odd tree debris. You can also ride along the channel edge [track] much of the way. Nice views out west over the plain.
The section running east from just off Canning Mills Rd is rideable [mostly along the side/up] for a short distance, then it takes a drop-off into the overgrowth/sticks.

A few weeks back I checked out the sections heading up the hill -on the right- toward Canning Dam. Lots of overgrown bushy trees/shrubs all along. You might hit a clear break somewhere along there, but not worth it, pushing through the scrub rest of the way.
Sections lower down near the river; various no-go signs posted.

If down that way around the Dam, there's a cool route you can do once you've climbed up and out of the Dam road. Around the back there's a track that winds up the hill -heading back north- then spits you out near the top of the golf course. From there you can do a run downhill [or through the golf course ;) ] into an old abandoned monster-house site with an old tennis court with views; track then runs further downhill and spits you out near the river/creek/rocks.

Cheers

Originally I zoomed way in on Google Maps satellite view to find the track, which you can just see sporadically running -mainly- north.

Don't have the exact entry point location on me, but it is one of two tracks, further back NorthEast from the first road bend a little north of Todd Rd. By memory it is the track further along a bit if you head toward the second road bend. I do remember perhaps 50m? or so in there's a bit of an open area that had some dumped rubbish and bits in it, before the area closed up again; the track kept heading climbing north up the hill. Eventually comes out alongside the southern boundary of the Araluen Estate up top.

Its worth riding down into the old house-lot area/tennis court as there's a track that runs further down the hill there -between lots- which takes you to near Rocky Pool area. You can ride along west a bit along the walking track there also until you hit the hike-a-bike section.

Is Todd Road the correct name? I cannot seem to find it on Google maps, well a Todd Road in the vicinity of Canning Dam that is.

Also is the homestead you mention the William Buckingham's Homestead?

Todd Road is actually just a rough gravel road; further south along the dam road; not far from the main drag over south. I can see it marked on google maps.

The old house block is half dug out from the big hillside. Defo would have been pretty fancy pants back when, and the name sounds posh, sooo🤔👍

I found Todd Road on Google Maps. No idea why my initial search didn't find it. Checking OSM maps on Ridewithgps, I have found a track named Old Albany Road, which ends up on the southern boundary of the Araluen Estate. However, it comes out at the southern end south of Todd Road. Marked in blue on my screen grab. Todd Road not shown on OSM.

Maybe it becomes the track you are talking about?

Its not that road/track. I did go down that for a stretch until it started going up a rather steep section of the hill which was very rough with branches and old tree matter covering the road. It got that bad that I turned back and went looking more over east for a better route. Defo not that one as I remember it paralleled the creek over on the left down below.

So its further along east -between the two road bends mentioned earlier-. The track is gravel all the way up the hill and tops out near the south-eastern boundary of the house estate area, then follows along west a bit along the southern boundary of the houses. (You can zoom in on google maps sat view and see the short stretch of that track there along the southern boundary).

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like some exploring to come when I get a chance to get up there.
