Kinetic
Postby Dent » Sat Aug 03, 2024 5:48 pm
Hi
I'm new here ! Love cycling . I've got a Malvern Star Kinetic in my bike "collection" . 7 bikes is not too many is it ? .
Would love to know more about it if any forum members can help
The frame serial appears to be CMO 19756. The paint on the bottom bracket is quite thick and the stamping is not so strong
Its a drop bar bike . Seems a bit better equipped than a brand new 10 speed bike I had in the late 70's. It's got engraving on the bar that may be a reference to Olympics?
Could it be that simple that it was built in June 1976 ?
Cheers

I think the Malvern Star Kinetic is more of an 80s era model. If it's got Shimano parts on it, they will have a two letter code on them somewhere. Derailleur body or cage, hubs, inner crank arms, for example.

Thanks Family guy
The alloy crank arms have a code that your information indicates March 1976. They are Sugino . I'm 58 and my gut feel says that mid 70's is not an unreal assumption
Clearly pictures would help here . Not sure how to post them on this platform
Cheers

Can't help on that model Malvern Star, but a 7 bike collection is certainly not excessive!Dent wrote: ↑Sat Aug 03, 2024 5:48 pmHi

The kinetic was an early 1990’s Malvern Star model. A mid range ‘racer’. Does it have Suntour gears on it? It’s definitely not 1976!

Graphic design and bicycle curation don't always align.

Thanks Pin20
Yep that's my bike . Exactly . It's missing the amber reflectors...I remove them anyway .Not a fan of them
The gurl is ok with my bikes since I built her a lovely Dutch bike with a Shimano Nexus 8 speed drive . I've got a Nitro Nostalgic Dutch bike as well so we ride them together for fun
Cheers

It's a bit like advertising for watches
They are always shown at 10 past 10

Hi Dent, the codes family guy listed are for Shimano components, Sugino codes are varied and confusing. Suntour Blaze was introduced in 1989, bang on time for your bike.Dent wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 5:41 pmThanks Family guy

The marketing team certainly did not excel with that catalogue.P!N20 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 12:10 pmCycling Wombat wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 11:45 am^ Was the style back then to have the seat post short?
Graphic design and bicycle curation don't always align.
The top one - presumably the most upmarket- does not mention any frame size options.
The Kinetic has a fairly typical range of frame size availability.
Then the bottom one - presumably the least expensive - only comes in 2 frame sizes !
6 speed freewheels on Road bikes is very typical of the late 1980’s.
Significantly better than the 5-speed freewheels from the early 1980’s.
By 1990 pretty much everything mid-range was 7-speed. As far as I know.
Since then of course the number of cogs has increased. New lightweight Road bikes in 2024 usually have Cassettes with 12 cogs.
Definitely not twice as good as 6 cogs !
I reckon that would be a good bike to ride - with better pedals and saddle !
Nice drivetrain, nice handling, robust, and attractive to look at.
While some would say that it’s significantly heavier than just about any modern Road bike that does not matter much for overall riding function.
Only helps to win races, which most cycling enthusiasts don’t do.
(Ok some of us might have dabbled in it once upon a time )

Also came back to say those dates codes won't work for Sugino. 88-89 feels right.
Look up 'fistful of seat post'. Made to be ridden mostly on the drops with upright excursions to the hoods.
