I just noticed the speed that the Teams Pursuit riders were doing = 70kmh, that was my best sprint speed. Just think about it for a moment.

Foo
9km/h better than my best sprint speed - 61km/h on outdoor velodrome on fixed gear bike. I was 60kg at the time.

They can have their top speeds, I'll keep my going up hills quickly. ;)

Two of them are on World Tour Teams for the road, so they can go uphill fast as well.

It isn't the first time elite athletes have been involved with drugs or dealing. Probably won't be the last either.

What programs are in place to discourage it so they aren't drawn to substance abuse...

Or is it a case from the official bodies of the sports, just get gold medals and sweep all the unpleasant stuff under the carpet?

Not kidding. Imagine going to Pig alley to do that.

(The area caught that nickname during WW2 thanks to US servicemen looking for some R&R action. It hasn't changed)

You would think he'd be smart enough to think that with a major event going on, Police would be more in force than at any other time ..... :?:

64.865km/hr average over 4km from what I worked out.

Still amazing stuff. I have no idea how they do it cramped over in such outlandish positions, let alone without crashing.

Bikes are also crazy. Looking at the developments in the past few years it seems to be the more 'praying mantis' position and weirdly the front forks going wider. I assume that's to clean up the airflow around the wheel. Frames are also a lot wider. Lots of crazy aerodynamics going on there!

Standing start though. Once they got up to speed, the speed they were holding is insane!

Just like in qualifying Richardson was good but not quite good enough. The reason Harrie has won so many world championships was clear for all to see

But he is still the only rider to have beaten Lavreysen in the last 1yr. :)

Lavrysen is leg pressing 800kg, so he has some serious power in those quads.

The Mens Madison, I have never seen so many crashes in one before.

3rd repercharge heat of the Mens Keirin had a very nasty fall where the rider was flung like a rag doll. Don't know how he is yet. :(

Lavrysen just to good in the Keirin final with Richo a wheel back for 2nd and Glaetzer 3rd.

Another nasty crash in the final of the Keirin with the Malay, Japanese and British rider Carlin going down in the front straight. :(

The Kiwis have done well on the Track with their rider Ellesse Andrews taking out the Gold medal in the Individual Sprint.

Gary Sutton retires with the knowledge that he has made a huge difference to the US girls Track Team and a Gold Medal in the Omnium to Jennifer Valente and sticking it to the Australian hierarchy that allowed that pommy twat Jones to sack him and destroy the moral of our AIS riders and sport.

What will he do about the general public that doesn't care about supporting the Olympics:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/athletes-a ... 5k13i.html

Disable javascript to read. The comments are pretty vicious, eg:
I just don't care. I refuse to subsidise the lifestyle of someone who chooses to play games for a living but can't monetise that hobby into a living wage.
and
Really, I think many need to come down to earth. I don’t think Australia has any political need to be on the Olympic medal leaderboard top 5 (like the US, China) to merit spending even more $ in sports.
And the worst:
I love sport. But I have never been able to understand why the tax payer should fund elite athletes who ultimately do the sport because THEY want to win. What does the average Australian get from the athletes competing?

I do agree with this comment to some extent.
Why are sports people given such public adoration and held up on such a pedestal.
What about those with academic achievements? Science? Humanitarian?
This is a sporting thread so sorry, but sporting accomplishments are given a disproportionate amount of credit in our society imo.

Cyclists less so, true. It is a sign of sporting acceptance that they aren't treated with disdain like the rest of us I guess.

I am talking sporting as a whole though. I would rather see a leading medical researcher, physicist, mathematician, humanitarian etc get recognition than sporting people.
Somebody who uses their brain rather than brawn to achieve greatness.
They do far more to help others and advance our lives than someone who can simply run, cycle or swim fast.

I don't get the wailing and gnashing of teeth re Matthew Richardson, its not like we reject athletes wanting to switch to Australia nor do we bat an eye when a cyclist joins a professional team

Don't know what his reasons are but his the only person who gets to decide whats best for him, both personally or for his career.

It's not like he's leaving a powerhouse track team - before Paris you have to go back to the Olympics in 2012 for our last a track gold with Anna Meares & 2004 when we last won a mens track gold.
