The older I get - so do my bike builds...........

Finally started building up this 1996 Colnago Master Olympic frameset I've had sitting about for ages.
Plenty of polished shiny stuff!
No hiccups so far.

Performed a surgical procedure on a bicycle cassette. A Cog-ectomy.

Because the cassette was significantly worn in 1 cog only..
an “old” cassette, 6-speed Shimano Uniglide which were state-of-the-art a few decades ago.

The other 5 cogs on this cassette worked fine without any “skipping” under moderate load with a lightly worn chain

On this generation of cassette the smallest cog screws on and locks the rest of them.
So to get it off you basically need 2 chain whips.
I only had one so I manufactured a small one from a long kitchen implement (that was discarded) and a short length of old chain

Once I got it off I was slightly dismayed to find (should have known this anyway) that the other 5 cogs were joined with 3 lengthways screws

But a hacksaw blade made short work of these.
The worn cog was removed and replaced with another 15-tooth cog from a later generation of Shimano cassettes (probably 8-speed)

Put it all back on the cassette body and screwed the small cog back on finger tight
( the act of pedaling will torque it up)

Put the wheel back on the bike and tested the shift indexing.
Then a short ride putting it under actual load conditions.
Passed with flying colours. Happy 8)

More wheelbuilding, one a build for another bloke I've done a few builds for over the years, and another rebuild for my other roadie, the commuter hack, with another funky instant-engagement hub into a spare rim.

Also serviced the suspension pivot bearings in my No. 2 MTB, which had been getting a bit creaky recently.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Dual sided power meter batteries needed changing and as always one battery was stuck in the cover. Usually use small screwdriver to carefully pry out but no luck today. Had the idea to use small magnet and that made it a simple quick procedure.

Last week or so noticed the front tyre required pumping every couple of days rather than weekly like rear tyre. Also noticed a small white blob on my shoe but thought nothing of it. Pumped the front tire this morning and went for a ride on damp roads and the faintest drizzle. Was thinking the fine drops on the handle bar looked whitish because they were so small. Then noticed the spurting white spray from the centreline of the tyre. Yes a small puncture was spurting but then stopped, then started and stopped a few times in the next 20 minutes before finally sealing. Completed ride fine.

Decided it was time to remove tyre and inspect as its been at least 18 months. Very little sealant left and had dried on walls of tyre. Could not see any debris in tyre. After trying to clean the build up off decided to fit a new tyre. Will keep old one as spare. It has done 12500km and still plenty of tread left.

Oh and cleaned the bike, the front end was covered in sealant.

Finally did a (my first) tube change for the $200 Facebook bike. The guy I got it from said the guy he got it from had let it go flat for too long and created an uneven spot.
New tube in with a bit of struggle getting the old valve out, only problem is I can't get the tyre to bead evenly. It's definitely on there and rolling, but I'm wondering if it means the deformation extends to the tyre itself and I'm gonna have to find somewhere that still sell in 26" soon... Not doing anything too rowdy with it, it's my commute bike.

In my experience, struggling to get an even bead seating is usually fixed by a good blast of air from a proper compressor. My current Schwalbe Marathon Almotions refused to seat using my track pump (tried 4 times) - every time they were not concentric to the rim. A good blast from my workshop compressor did the trick.

I'll try asking a shop, I've only bought myself a fairly basic floor pump so far.

Pop down to the local servo (if the tubes are the correct fitting) and pop them there perhaps ?

Put new tyres on my road bike. Trying 28mm wide - up from 25mm. Still in Maxxis Refuse. The old tyres certainly have done a good job - I’ve only had one puncture and the tread is covered in holes.

I rode mine. Also spotted a 3T Strada, very uncommon bicycle, in the 1x setup as well.

I'm happy with the bike fit now as well.

Put my old tt saddle on the Reacto. Selle Italia SLR T1 that has had the nose shortened. About 15 years old. Haven't riddennit for over a decade. Fits well though and not chafing the nether regions like the Prologo did. Have given it some leather conditioner and raised it a touch since the photo. Hope it lasts.

Swapped the clamps 180° and moved the saddle forward a touch. ~8mm.
Won't ride it until the new year. The clamps will stay like that. I don't like set back. More room to move and capable to be more forward.

Today, I went to the local bike shop and bought a new front light as my old one unclipped from my handlebars the other day as I was screaming downhill at about 70kph on a bit of a bumpy road…. Not much left of it as I discovered when I rode back up the hill and collected all of the bits… also ultrasonic cleaned my chain so I should be good to go for my usual Saturday morning ride.

Fitted a new rear derailleur cable to my 11 speed Cannondale CAAD9. 15 years old and nearly 60K km. with not much in the way of original parts or wheels attached to the frame. It's still my favourite bike to ride.
As usual the cable frayed inside the shifter and was hanging on by one strand of wire.
5K km for this cable. Better than 3K with some, worse than 7-8K km with others.

Yeah, I'm looking out for a Caad10 after test riding a smaller one. But talk is the Caad9 and 12 are great rides too ?

I salvaged a Fuji Team Pro with 11 speed 105 recently... Nice to put that drivetrain on classy old frames. :)

I have a ?2013 TCR I bought as a frame off ebay. Had more hits than the Beatles on it but has 32k km on it by me and been bullet proof. Clearance for reasonable sized tyres too, so it's a keeper.
