While my fitness is very ordinary at the moment I did work my butt off on the indoor trainer all week to try and get ready to join you guys on Sunday, thinking that if I blew up, I could always cut the ride short and make my way back home taking it real easy.
I got the bike ready, fitted lights and new batteries the night before, made sure I had all the gear needed to fix a flat tyre, got up real early Sunday, seen that it was raining, checked the rain radar and wimped out.

Mostly sunny. Areas of morning frost. Light winds. - looks like a great way to ride off an expected hangover......
now to set the alarm for 6am.....
Out of interest do you normally take bike locks for cafe stops - just wondering since i never usually stop .....

Dont worry about lock always someone to keep eye out in group and most cafes on nepean highway are cycle friendly.
I envision coffee break will be somewhere around Frankston and there is a good cafe which cyclist frequent near cinemas (webb street?? I think)
See you guys Sunday

There were 5 riders this morning: Grupetto, Greyhound Tom, Crog, Erik & Matt.Blak. As we rode along in the dark and in the rain, I was feeling virtuous and hard-core. Then my feet were soaked and I was just feeling wet and cold.
We decided to shorten the ride due to the weather and turned off before Frankston and returmned via Thompson's Rd. We still managed to do 48km at 25kmh average.
I didn't gt my coffee until I got home, I didn't fancy sitting down in my wet gear, then getting back on the bike to ride home.
I enjoyed meeting everyone, looking forward to the next ride.

I was also rather pleased that the ride did get cut a bit shorter, not so much because of the conditions but more to the point, my condition, because on that last bump in the road on the way home my legs started feeling it.
The bike’s been cleaned, the chain re-greased, the gear got washed and is drying in front of the heater, and I’m ready for the next one.
Cheers,
Tom
(Edit) As soon as I fix that creaky bottom bracket that is

Good to see some hardcore guys out there but bike is a bit worse for wear for experience. Finished washing it now it needs a lube etc (new workstand is great Matthew)
I am keen in the future for more rides and we can discuss routes etc, todays was a little made up on return leg but all in all was not bad.
Lets keep this topic rolling and for sake of a day any people intersted in a ride weekend of 11th/12th of approx ~50k's route: TBA (but maybe suggest Tooradin and Return as less traffic lights)
Either day suits but Sunday an earlier start would suit myself and probably Eriik and Matthew due to commitments mine being kids swimming lessons.
Will see if anything develops.
As an aside Tom good to catch up, told Sophia Hilli I met you and she knows you further let me know when going to Vets again I may come down a nd give it ago. It will mean more motivation at least to ride and who knows maybe another bike

I like the idea about a run out to Tooradin as it would provide the opportunity to concentrate on speed a little more, and I could certainly do with a bit of work in that department.
Southern Vets are racing next Sunday the 4th of July at Casey Fields Criterium 9am start and unless it is wet and miserable I think I better front and get back into it again.
It would be great to ride with you in a race at Casey’s.
Cheers,
Tom

Greyhound Tom, Crog, Erik & Matt.Blak.
I am truly grateful for the support and patience shown by you toward me being new to cycling in a group.
To my amazement you all showed me that there are people out there, that are willing to give a new fella a fair go.
I must say that although the weather was bad I felt good to get my feet wet so to speak.
And how better than with a good bunch of fellas. I hope to ride with you all again if I'm welcome?
I too will be working on my speed furiously now to be more in tune with your caliber.
Took the bike strait to the shop to get the gears fixed. And then spent the next two hours cleaning it and all the wet and dirty clothes.
regards Jez

Sorry I missed it on Sunday... the World Cup schedule got the better of me and after falling asleep at half time during the USA game, I didn't wake up again until after 9 (I think there's a lesson to be learned for the TDF... don't watch in bed!)..
Will hopefully be back into normal sleeping patterns for the next ride, sounds like you guys did well (especially considering the conditions!)..

Next Ride: Tooraddin, Sun 11-Jul
Postby matt.blak » Tue Jun 29, 2010 6:26 am
There seems to be some support for a group ride to Tooraddin, So I would like to suggest a ride on Sunday 11-Jul at 7am.
Start from McDonalds in Hampton Park, turn left at South Gippsland Hwy, turn round at Tooraddin and return to the Golden Arches. This is my normal ride, its mostly flat, with only a few small (tiny) hills. There is a emergency lane the whole way and light traffic early. 56km if we turmn at the airfield, 50km if we turn at Tooraddin.
Route: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
Average speed 25-30 kmh, should take about 2 hours. Its not a race, but it is not supposed to be an easy cruise either, so we will be pushing along, with allowances for slower riders.
I will be doing this ride as it is my regular training ride, so come along and join me. Coffee when we get back to McCafe. Group Hug optional.
On 11-Jul, Twilight starts at 07:06, Sunrise is at 07:35, so the days are getting longer...
