Commute tyres

Postby Mulger bill » Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:06 am

G'Day All.
The new Kona commuter runs Conti Country Rides 700x35c on 24mm rims. Not the best road tyre, maybe good on dirt roads or hardpack :?

Is the rim too wide to run 28mm tyres?
If I can fit 28s, what's a good one? Grip and puncture resistance are the big selling points.

Thanks
Shaun

Based on my limited experience, I can strongly recommend Continental Ultra Gatorskins 700x28. Grip is good, even on gravel (at least, the gravel around Sydney Olympic Park, particularly Wentworth Common and Brickpit). Probably not as good as Black Chilli on the GP4000S (slightly slippery on wet metal grates).

Never had a puncture (fingers crossed). My rear tyre got caught in a metal grate once (nearly caused a fall) which scraped the sides, but the tyre still seemed okay after that.

Greetings Mulger Bill, Not 100% re the tyre fitting on the rim, Should work, but may pay to wait for one of the more learned forumites to confirm.
Re tyres, Specialized Armadillos, red sidewall, have been good to me so far, 1200km (+/-) no punctures.
Enjoy...

+1 on the Armadillos

In over a year I've hit so much glass and nothing got through.

I have had, however 2 flats, both caused by the smallest pieces of wire you could imagine, wire brush stuff maybe.
