How hard is it to buy a 12-27 6600 cassette on line?

Postby tuco » Fri Jul 25, 2008 11:38 am

Very!

I have up to a 23 but I'm after a 27 for the hills and they may as well not exist. I've even tried ProBikeKit who seem to be out of stock of everything I'm after.

I've tried numerous online sites but there's nothing.

I've been trying to avoid the lbs because it'll be twice the price and they'll have to order one anyway. They wont go bust without my purchase, I've already given them over $4,500 this year.
I think we can do better. I KNOW we can do better.

Ribble Cycles has every variation of the Ultegra 10-speed cassette available at the moment: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... HIMCASS915

Cheers.

Where did you actually look? PBK is down for maintenance at the moment. I assume they also have them.

PBK was up when I looked but had 0 quantity.

I'll check out the other links posted.

I thought you were possibly looking at domestic sites, which is personal preference, of course. I'm actually not surprised PBK didn't have them. Looking at their site recently, I have to wonder what they are selling. It seems that they are out of stock of so many things. I wonder if there is some story behind it. Groupsets must be such a big seller for this type of business, but PBK have been out of most of them for ages. I know they are available because I phoned TotalCycling before ordering the other day and they said they were loaded with Centaur as an order had arrived two days ago.

Anyway, the big problem if PBK aren't holding is postage and the temptation to buy up things you don't really need to justify postage. You can log on to various sites and get to the checkout stage, compare the final prices and bail on all but the cheapest price. Still better than the LBS probably.

As an asside. If you feeling pathetic about going the 27, I went the 29.

Something else I just remembered. If you haven't ordered from overseas before and aren't confident in the sellers, but want to use them if it's going to go well, it is worth remembering that calls to Ireland and UK are 18c a minute. I phoned TotalCycling recently to make sure everything I wanted was in stock. Even with being on hold while the bloke checked, the called couldn't have been expensive and I got a feel for the place and felt better because I knew the order was going to leave ASAP. So don't be put off ringing due to call costs. They are very good at the moment.

Another thing someone put to me this morning was that he bought a compact crank set and swaps them depending on the ride he's doing. This requires a newer 'one FD does all' front derailleur, which you probably have since your bike is new. You'll also do well to get a second chain with joiner to accomodate the compact front.

It's too late for me, the 29 is in transit. I hope. I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

swapping the cranksets will also require you to adjust the position of the FD, and that would mean setting up your cable tension for proper shifting as well.

Not any more according to a bloke I rode with this morning. Shimano and Campag now have a one FD for both.

Yep, they are now! I got the email. Too late though. I went through Ribble. If they're not going to keep stock levels up then it's their loss.

The larger the number (25, 27 etc) will make it easier, but the gapps are bigger ebtewen the gears.

Next step up from a 12-25 will be a 12-27 in Shimano, 11-28 in SRAM or the Campag raod ones even go to a 12-29 (me thinks).

Any higher and you start getting into MTB style territory.

Either that or compact cranks.

Goodies arrived today - just in time for the weekend and a test ride.
Not bad service from England. Ordered on the 25th and arrived on the 1st.

I'm hoping mine arrive today but not holding my breathe, they were dispatched on Monday so there is a small glimmer of hope.
