Joy of passing congestion

Postby find_bruce » Wed Feb 27, 2019 2:48 pm

One of the members I follow on strava titled his ride "Whizzing past congested traffic gives me perverse joy ". It got me to thinking there should be a specific word for that joy. Schadenfreude gets close, but I think its more than just misfortune as much as a celebration of movement.

Suggestions ?

A couple of weeks ago I commuted slightly further than usual to meet my wife. I mentioned to her about how far the traffic was backed up to a standstill and how many cars that I passed.

She suggested that I would have felt very smug. I agreed.

So I'm happy to go with "smug" as a description, but it's probably not as specific enough.

"Righteous" and "Superior" are my choices but that probably says a lot about my attitude to bikes and cars.

I was thinking a portmanteau. Smugcycle would work, but I am smugcycle most times I ride even if I don’t pass congestion.

Vindicycle perhaps- the joy you feel when your decision to ride a bike was vindicated

Years ago early in the morning I got cut off by a motorist in Haberfield, Sydney. 20 minutes or whatever later I got cut off by the same motorist in Sydney's CBD.

If it was peak period the motorist wouldn't of stood a chance of cutting me off the second time

Fahraddpendelnlust?

Bicycle commuting lust.

I get this every day when I can get to work/home about the same time during peak hours as I can with a car, and about 30 minutes quicker than by public transport.

At least the traffic on my commute is moving most of the time, though slowly. When I was working at Quakers Hill, Old Windsor Road was a carpark morning and afternoon.

The term would be souveränität - the exact opposite feeling you have when you are stuck in congestion.

Smug is the perfect description so the cycling verb is smug-cycle.
As in "I smug-cycled to work today"

But not me personally, I am a service tech so I am one of those poor buggers you are smug-cycling past.
