Joining a cycling group (South-East Melbourne)

Postby Happyhunting » Wed Nov 13, 2019 11:31 am

Hi Ladies

I live near Donvale (South-East Melbourne) walking trails and I would like to join a cycling group.

Please let me know if anyone would like to include me in their group.

Also I am looking to buy budget friendly cycling gear such as
- clip on pedels
- Jersey
- bike shorts

Any online/ retail stores please let me know.

Thank you so much.

I'm from Perth but might I suggest calling some bike shops near you, as they are often the meeting point for cycling groups. Do you want to ride on weekends, or mid week?
Different groups will be friendlier or more competitive, so be up front about what sort of rider you are and hopefully you'll find a suitable group :)

As to cycling gear, online stores Chain Reaction Cycles and Wiggle (same parent company?) have a brand called DHB with great value for money, but being online you can't try it on like you can in a shop. Anaconda outdoor stores have their Fluid brand that is also good value/performance for money.

Clip on pedals - road style (single sided, harder to walk off the bike), or mountain bike style (double sided, easier to walk in shoes)?
My advice is to loosen the tightening screw on the pedals while you get used to them, otherwise you could get stuck to the pedals when you need to stop and will gently but surely topple over :)

I'm tall and skinny so I have to buy jerseys to fit my height, then they are too baggy for me so I take them to my local tailor who takes them in for about $12. So if they don't fit just right in store, don't be shy to get them modified!
When you are driving your car, you are not stuck IN traffic - you ARE the traffic!!!

Hi Happy hunting,

Whilst I'm not in Victoria, I've done a bit of research into what clubs are available down there as I'm looking at moving to Melbourne in the future.
I don't know what kind of cycling group your after however I will assume it would be more for recreation and meeting new people etc so I thought perhaps a Bicycle Touring group might be of interest to you.

In Melbourne region my research has come up with at least 3 of these types of groups which makes me sad as there's nothing like these in Sydney where I am right now.

The Closest to you (yeah I looked up Donvale in Google maps  ) would be the Knox bicycle Touring Club http://www.knoxbike.org/

Then there is the Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club which is very active so I feel and been going on for a long time https://www.mbtc.org.au/

And the bayside Touring club which could be a bit far from you but still an option http://baybike.org/

These clubs are not just for touring but for regular group rides non-competitive and have a good recreation feel.
Most the other bike clubs listed are either racing/road or Mountain bike groups...so if that's what you want, you can find them in this registry.
https://www.bicycles.net.au/directory/? ... &order=ASC

Hope this helps you somehow.

Cheers

My local knowledge is limited to Balwyn/Surrey Hills but just south of Donvale Whitehorse Cyclists is a large club that runs multiple rides including a couple of women's rides if that's your thing I see their recreational riders a lot on the Mullum Mullum / Koonung trails thru Donvale

https://whitehorsecyclists.org.au/home/calendar/

do my own repairs/builds but bike shop wise again just outside the southern reaches of Donvale I've never heard a bad word said about https://cycleworks.com.au/bicycles-box-hill/ and plenty of good things

Clothingwise I always recommend https://www.cyclingsports.com.au/ might be a bit far south near junction of Union Rd / Canterbury rd price wise check out the website...some tendency towards expensive italian stuff but does seem to stock from budget thru to highend and is possibly better than average for womens stuff

Mrs antigee rides with a women's group based out of Albert Park on a Saturday morning so that means driving or a long ride or train part way / either way but apparently is friendly and caters from recreational through to full on pace chain gang ...no idea what they are called and for all i know might actually be a cover story! if interested and can't find something local that attracts PM and I'll ask her

hope helps
