Gravel routes using strava

Postby warthog1 » Sun Oct 24, 2021 8:04 am

Haven't known where the hell I am going on this gravel caper.
I can do out n back to Heathcote on the O'Keefe rail trail.
Did that first up.
Anyway new routes were a problem.
However I have a garmin head unit capable of mapping (edge1000) and a Strava account.
Some I follow also ride gravel and have Strava.
Turns out Strava is very good for route design.
You can hit the "ride this route" button on their ride when you open it on a computer rather than the phone app.
I have however opened strava again on another page to copy/modify the route to have my different start/finish location.
It lets you choose gravel roads/trails as a preferred surface too.
All this time using it and I never knew.
Riding the paved roads is much simpler and I never needed to worry about where to go, learn where on bunches too.
Anyway I haved copied and modded a couple of routes of my own and it is much easier planning longer rides off the main roads.
Link Strava to Garmin connect and the head unit downloads the routes that you have starred via wifi when it starts up.
The head unit then gives you turn by turn guidance when you select the route on it.
A very useful feature for those like me that didn't know.
Dunno how many my old edge 1000 will hold, but there are 5 on there now.

It’s brilliant - especially when you’re on holidays.

The route chosen is also based on popularity by either Strava users so it basically lets you know where all the locals ride.

Can select hilly or flat as well.

If you're in Victoria there is a FB group called Gravel Grinders. In NSW it's Graveleur. Both have useful information about routes and events.
Haven't found a Qld equivalent yet. Apart from Audax Qlrd which is running a gravel series.

Thanks Ron. I might have a look.
I struggle with fakebook though.
I am mainly interested in routes around home.
A few I follow have some good knowledge.
