I'm sorry mate. That Fandom link would suggest any organised ride under the name critical mass has long disappeared (aka. "fizzled out") locally.

Don't be disheartened though... there IS a lot of local bicycle nerds riding in Perth and lurking on more contemporary fora.

Ask around on the Reddit Perth sub could reveal some options.

A year or so back PerthNightRides [Reddit] would get around a dozen riders at its peak.
Was fun. Had our resident Italian rider on a fixie at most rides.

Dead now.

thanks for the information :

For those who don't know what Critical Mass is this:

Critical Mass is a form of direct action in which people travel as a group on bikes at a set location and time. The idea is for people to group together to make it safe for each other to ride bicycles through their streets, based on the old adage: there's safety in numbers.

Critical Mass events highlight the numbers of people who want to use their bike on the streets, but are usually unable to do so without risking their safety. They are a call to action to councils, governments and road planners to properly and thoughtfully design in the safety of all road users, including those who would prefer to walk and cycle, instead of prioritising motor traffic above all else.

The event originated in 1992 in San Francisco (typically held on the last Friday of every month);[1] by the end of 2003, the event was being held in over 300 cities around the world.[2]

Critical Mass has been described as "monthly political-protest rides", and characterized as being part of a social movement.[3] It has been described as a "monthly protest by cyclists reclaiming the streets."[4] Participants have insisted that these events should be viewed as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organized demonstrations.[5][6] This stance allows Critical Mass to argue a legal position that its events can occur without advance notification of local police.[7][8] Though they are sometimes described as political, they are not necessarily

Since it's not currently active, would anyone be willing to reactivate it and have a Critical Mass Halloween this Friday? Here's an example

it is very funny !!

What is (political) point?

Without a clearly stated, and clearly (pre) communicated political objective such an event will be reported (and policed*) as a bunch of ***holes obstructing “hardworking, normal citizens” .

The shock jocks and media trolls will have a field day. Skynews will love it!

* obstructing traffic is an offence here.

Mr. Plod is (unlike NSW - c.f. Operation Pedro) generally sensible about minor infractions of the road rules (like MHLs and riding across cross walks). Please think carefully before doing something that might result in a crackdown being ordered.

In Sydney at least, the movement was taken over by loonies.

To the left of those cyclists on the road, there's a lovely dedicated and separated pathway for cyclists. So much so, it's illegal to cycle on the bridge itself.

This act of lunacy made the popular media. You can imagine what they did with it.

if you read wikipedia .Critical Mass has been described as "monthly political-protest rides", and characterized as being part of a social movement.[3] It has been described as a "monthly protest by cyclists reclaiming the streets."[4] Participants have insisted that these events should be viewed as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organized demonstrations.[5][6] This stance allows Critical Mass to argue a legal position that its events can occur without advance notification of local police.

The event originated in 1992 in San Francisco (typically held on the last Friday of every month); the event was being held in over 300 cities around the world.for instance :

Melbourne, Australia:
Melbourne, like the rest of Australia, has strict traffic laws. Obstructing traffic can lead to fines and penalties, and the specifics can be found in the road traffic regulations of Victoria.

Barcelona, Spain:
In Barcelona, Spain, obstructing traffic is considered an offense, and there are specific traffic laws and regulations that govern this. Spanish traffic laws are covered by the Ley de Seguridad Vial (Road Safety Law). Obstructing traffic in Barcelona can lead to fines, and the severity of the penalty may depend on the circumstances and the specific location within the city. In Barcelona, in my last participation, the police were escorting

Buenos Aires, Argentina:
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, traffic laws are in place to maintain order and safety on the city's roads. Obstructing traffic can result in fines or penalties, depending on the nature and severity of the obstruction. The specific regulations are defined by the Código de Tránsito y Transporte (Traffic and Transport Code).

... obstructing Hardworking, regular citizens, and I respect this idea; it's just one day a month and a couple of hours. Sometimes there are situations like road closures for an event, street pavement changes,.. that last longer than the quick passage of a group of cyclists."

Thoglette Don't be alarmist and discourage people from joining an event that takes place in many cities, and there's no problem. And if it was done before in Perth, why not try to do it again?

Australians are relatively apolitcal when it comes to protests.... for better or worse.

Either way, I don't want politics and/or erratic zealots ruining my enjoyment of a bike ride.

So what are you protesting? Or are you just wanting to "have fun"?

To be specific: if you don’t have a narrative, someone (e.g. the Murdoch press & shock jocks ) will crest one.

In most cities/countries you're not required to wear a helmet or get pushed off the road by cyclist haters (that was last week). Or referred to as "cockroaches on wheels". Or ignored by the police. (Perth is, fortunately, not Sydney )

Hang around here for a while. All the above are regularly discussed here abouts.

I was in that Sydney Critical Mass, one of the issues, in my view, was when a few ‘solo operators’ decided to also try to block traffic in the other direction, this not well received by motorists (obviously) and many of the other participants.

If you are new to Australia, why reinvent the wheel? Please look at Bike West and the current initiatives. Critical Mass has not evolved into a progressive protest solution in Australia. The role and history and results elsewhere differ.

It is genuinely worthwhile learning more about cycling advocacy and the history and seeing which other groups are active and can use positive support.
