Once you're wet, you're wet - is there some subtle difference I'm missing between a 15 minute soak & a 70 minute one?

Yes. The wear and tear on your bike. It only takes a few lengthy rides in the wet and you are almost guaranteed to need new headset, bottom bracket or wheel bearings. Any or all of them. You are doing many many months of wear in just a few rides.

Brake pads, rotors, rims (if on rim brakes) and chains cop a beating too.

After a wet week or two in Sydney I rode this morning and was presented with a lovely “cheep cheep” sound from my bottom bracket.

Cold and boredom.

And the higher chance of crashing - the more time in the rain the more time in less visibilty and vision, the more time in slippery conditions, the more chance for a pothole hidden under running water.

But for me boredom is a lot of it. 15 minutes of cold and wet and misery is way better than 70 minutes of same. Plus a 70 min ride in good weather has more to see and I can think about things other than "faaaark it's cold. faaaark it's wet Faaaaaaaaark that bloody twincab thing!"

although I suppose the twincab thing is just as likely to happen in the 15 minute run these days.

You haven't had cold until you've ridden in snow - when already soaking wet. And then having to go down a big descent. That's very very bad.

Anyhow - this morning was nice and dry, sunshine as well.

That'll learn me - was trying to spot the flags so I could swim between them on the way home - wasn't cold though - temp remained well over 25 so it was like swimming in the Pilbara.

On the plus side I don't have to wash the sweat out of my helmet

True, but the first heavy rain you ride in will wash the sweat from your helmet into your eyes, which is not fun :x

That's where you have those little cycling caps. They are not often seen these days but are good in rainy conditions.

It is fairly dry around here, just some very very small drops of rain here and there. But I don't trust the weather at the moment. Even on my weekend rides I'm being careful not to stray too far from home - just doing loops because of the threat of bad weather.

I figured you'd like the morning weather. It was stinking humid and warm but did cool down later. I left late (slept in and tired).

Went out Saturday, humid early and spicy in the sun but then it got cloudy and wasn't too bad. This morning was cool but the slight threat of rain meant the school zone was absolutely nuts.

If it was back, I didn't notice it much at all. Riding conditions today quite easy.

Today wasn't as humid as recent weeks. Slept in and missed the road ride at 6:30am, so went for a MTB loop at 11:30. Hot, sure, but not humid. Enough water and some shade was nice.

Nice pleasant temperature at 4:30 today.

Garmin reckons maximum 36°C but it didn’t feel too hot. It got windy however, crosswinds galore.

It was a bit foggy around Prospect Dam but it cleared fairly quickly. I started quite late (because it is too dark before 6:30am) so I probably missed the worst of it.

Had some 10 or so kangaroos I had to get past through there, they really slow you down.
