RUOK?

Postby foo on patrol » Sun Jan 26, 2020 6:22 pm

Seeing as there is one here, I'm starting it! This is to check up on everyone that maybe going through difficult times and to lend support. I'm on other sites that have this specific thread and it provides a place where others can say what is dragging them down and seek some help. So there you have it, open up and seek support.

Think this is appropriate thread to put in a link to this Health and Wellness Cycling camp. I think its a great concept.

Found this very interesting, can relate to it !

Deals with how men differ from women when under stresses - some of the better stuff I've ever read.

Again thanks for you thoughts.

On Tuesday I get into a really dark place due to working under the truck that I drive. My body was so racked with pain I was near in tears and with the stress of the marriage breaking up, I decided that I couldn't handle the stress and chronic pain at the same time.

I ended up phoning my wife because if I didn't talk to the person that knows me best I don't know far I would have gone. I then rang a good friend that does have problems with depression that I've been there for and ended up getting my head space better.

The pain that has smashed me got to the point yesterday, that I would not have been able to drive back to Brisbane so I sort the help of a Dr and was given some Oxycodone.

Take care all and thanks

Good work on taking the steps to manage the situation pro-actively, nicely done.

A gentle word of warning on the oxycodone.
I'm sure you're aware of the addictive nature of opioid medications. They numb all pain, physical and mental.
Take it easy on 'em. They lull you into a false sense of well-being that over a remarkably short period of time can end with a big crash.
Take it easy on yourself too.

@baabaa I have no problems with booze and don't drink through the week, due to my job. Just eating stuff derived from the ground doesn't do it for me and I enjoy seafood to much anyway but thanks.

Good, I really dont care what you or anyone else eats or drinks just as long as it is the best food for you, and you keep eating it.

Yeah, the vegan advocacy masquerading as dietary advice probably doesn't have a place here.

The thread was created as a place for people to reach out and be supported, not be pathologised or preached to..

On a related note, this forum really needs a 'Like' and a 'Dislike' button.

I see no preaching.
People are more than capable of making up their own mind as to what advice they take or what they eat.
18 years in health care I see plenty of evidence of dietary choices affecting physical and mental health.
Happy to read the info and decide myself rather than have it eliminated.
Fair enough if it becomes totally dietary there are other threads.

I'm actually really pleased this thread is here, so I'm going to go out and offer myself as...I don't know what to call it. Just a random set of ears?

If anyone needs a random to talk to, PM me and we'll sort out phones etc. To be clear, am not offering therapy or counselling, just a random person to talk to. Can even do it with just user names, i.e.

Hey 10sp, you gotta sec to talk?

Yeah, no problem RandomUser64, go for it..

Other than losing the excess weight, the biggest change I noticed from losing the animal products and fats were the mental calmness it gave me. Handy if one is going through some difficult times.

I saw a similar effect from cycle commuting which I no longer do due to multiple work locations.
The exercise definitely made me feel more positive getting to work.
I was also able to process work and leave it behind on the way home.

I agree that individuals are able to make choices when presented with information, when they ask for options or information.
In this case though, we hadn't even gotten 6 posts in and Veganism was volunteered as a means of addressing mental health issues. I'd like to see how long a mental health practitioner would hang on to their accreditation using this as their treatment modality with clients..

Client : "I feel anxious all the time, I can't face going to work, my boss stresses me out and I'm sleeping badly.."

Therapist : "Have you tried Kale and Kombucha thickshakes?"

A person gave experience of what worked for them.
The OP has already responded without argument and dismissed that path.
Able to make up his own mind clearly.

That post also contained this.
I guess this is just a very broad and widely sweeping comment that men don't often address, but please look after yourself, do eat well and try find time to enjoy both the cooking and eating of what you wish to eat.
Maybe even take some time off the booze??
It may or even will take time to start thinking stuff which is not rubbish and get back to a clear head, but it will come your way.
I didn't see that as bad advice.
Your example doesn't bear any relationship imo.
The poster is not claiming to be a mental health therapist but simply giving commentary on what worked for him.

I am no mental health therapist however my sister is.
Self care is an important consideration from my conversations with her.

I agree with you in that self-care is extremely important, for everyone. We'll leave it at that and let the thread exist for it's original purpose, as a support mechanism for the mental health wellness of individuals whenever required.

My post has been removed as it seems that anyone with have or coming close to a eating disorder has been deemed as veganism.

You can't have dislike. At least tolerance, better yet acceptance. Like it?
