Pogacar taking his nationals TT by 6 minutes and improving his time on the same course from 2020 by over a minute. Looking OK coming into the TDF. Hopefully he is in peak form for a good battle with JV!

I had many tell me I didn't know what I was talking about, when I said that he wouldn't get back to where he was after that crash. You only needed to look at the injuries and his age and know that.

He could still do well in short races but even those are slipping out of his grasp now.

I’m with you Foo.

Never thought he had a chance.

If it wasn’t for his status, if he was assessed on metrics alone, would be even be at Pro Conti level ?????

Oh so tempted to abuse my moderator tools & change topic to "Froome moving on ... slowly"

Of course his worst is waay better than my best, even in my dreams, but sport is ruthless - see it every years at the Australian swimming championships - yes you've won X gold medal and have lots of adoring fans, but times up, next!

Reckon he’s much better passing on his wisdom in the car rather than on the bike.
Unless it’s the teams sprinter in the grupetto….

Yeah, he has lots of experience to pass on and should have some idea of tactics and would be valuable to new riders on the big stage.

Tell me why, anyone thought that Froome would come back to the same level of riding, as he was at before the fall?? :? His age the type of injury and length of time away from riding and racing, was never, ever, going to allow that!

Foo
+11 for this.

The man had a fractured femur, elbow and ribs, and has still come back to race at a high level. Plus the whole garbage about him snorting too much Ventolin, and the press generally being a bunch of brain-dead sooks all makes his ability to continue racing even more impressive.
I had a broken femur myself and it has ruined me, a lot of things I used to do are not the same and will never be the same.

That he can get back to a high level is damn good, irrespective of what the doubters say.

Maybe the doubters should try it and see how they go… They’d probably crumble into a mental mess.

Agree with you. My fracture was compound and mid thigh, so has also has muscle damage as well as being shorter and rotated outwards.

Agree that it’s amazing he got back to where he did, but winning GT’s ??? He’s gotta be realistic.

It’s a bit surprising how over the last decade there have been a number of stand-out climbing specialist / GT contenders who have looked as if they were about to rewrite the history books.
But after a few outstanding seasons they have gone off the boil - usually due to serious injury.

I am thinking of Chris Froome and Egan Bernal of course, but there are probably others who might be described this way.

Sad really, but it could have been worse of course - both of these outstanding riders suffered life-threatening injury.
And ironically not while they were actually racing.

I was disappointed that Froomey was not at Le Tour.
But that’s cycling sport, has been other big names who just didn’t fire up like they used to.
Thinking Peter Sagan and Caleb and others.
But was good to see Pinot and Alaphilippe get amongst the action.

Will we see Froomey back in the peloton?
I hope so, but it’s looking a bit unlikely.
As far as I know, Israel Premiertech is not going to the Vuelta.
They will be at the Klasica San Sebastián this weekend, but not sure if Froomey will be riding with them.

I would suggest that I’d be surprised if he raced in the WT again.

If you look at his pro cycling stats page, you can see how far he hasn't been able to make it back.

His best result so far this year was 12th at the Warney in Feb, then a couple of 14ths on some smaller stage races. And that's about it.

His only listed next race is the Czech Tour which is a 2.1 race ....

3 stages down in the Czech tour and Froome has already lost 49+ minutes and is 119th of 131 riders

Don't quit your day job... Oh wait.

Even more suprising that Bernal has found it hard to get back to top form... Just goes to show how dialed in these athlete's are.

It's really sad to see Froome's potentially last race being a .2Pro race (The Tour of Hainan).

I wonder if in hindsight, despite his desire and belief whether he'd do things differently and just admit that he cannot/could not have come back from those injuries at his age.

I mean, he finished 93rd, in the peloton on a flat 92km stage.

Granted he didn't lose time yet, but in his [prior race, a 4 day Tour of Turkey (I think), he didn't finish the last (of 4 stages) and was way off the pace.

Just say it Froome, despite your best efforts, it aint gonna happen and retire with a great record, halted by a nasty crash which you were lucky to survive.

And Cav is the same, just retire from the long ones and enjoy the shorter ones, whilst helping others coming through.

Mind you, Cav does have the slimmest of chances in winning ONE more stage ..... maybe.

Meanwhile at the Tour of Hainan

Stage 2 : Froome 80th (AT) 4:03 on stage, 82nd O/All (AT) 4:13
Stage 3 : Froome 85th (AT) 16:14 on stage, 77th O/All (AT) 20:30
Stage 4 : Froome 50th (AT) 13:01 on stage, 66th O/All (AT) 33:01
Stage 5 : About to start

Mind you, his team mate, Sebastian Berwick is doing well at 2nd in GC by 0:01 ....

I'm of the belief that if you make the decision to retire, bloody well stick to it because you won't lose respect from those around you but if you carry on with changing your mind because things didn't work out, then the chances of you falling flat on your face is very high when you don't get what you want. Like I said, he should just target the shorter races and teach some up and coming riders the art of sprinting and show them what to do by following his wheel, because I believe he still has a little left in him for wins in the shorter rides and that certainly be any embarrassment to him or anyone think any less of him.
