Coast or or Godwana rainforest and highlands?

Hey my partner and I are currently cycling Cooktown to Melbourne. We are on the Brisbane Vslley Rail trail atm. From Nimbin we are not sure wether to take the coast or from casino take the Bruxner Highway to Tabulam, and from there take Long gully road and follow it south to the Gwydir highway. Has anyone ridden around these areas or is it possible. Would like to plot a path through the national parks if possible?
