Lycra shorts
Postby AndyW » Sun Jan 24, 2021 10:32 pm
I own the bontrager solstice cycling shorts (Link attached below)
These are my first and only lycra shorts and looking to get another one to rotate for my 15-50km fitness rides.
Firstly, I'm curious whether anyone had the same pants and have compared them with others? I.e. How are they priced and how does the padding perform for pricepoint?
I could get an identical one but I thought I'd ask the forum first. Perhaps there is another brand that's better value around the same price point ($100).
A durable, fitted one with some "pockets" would be ideal.
Cheers,
Andy

$100 provides a pile of options - see any of the big online stores: ABC Bikes, Wiggle, Chain reaction etc etc

They are $165 at the moment.
They do the same thing as bibs as well, they might be more comfortable again without elastic around the waist. I've never tried them, the bibs are somewhat uncommon (not that many brands out there even do anything like that).

Although I’ve recently got a pair of the bib shorts and like them even more!

g-boaf - I saw the Rapha shorts and got the idea of the pockets from them, but seeing if there were sub $100's shorts alternative shorts before forking out $165.
Warnesy - Thanks they look like a good option, which I'll consider.
Any other QLD local recommended Short brands most welcome.

Only buy Rapha when they have sales on. Any other time is far too costly.AndyW wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 3:39 pmThoglette - Thanks for the heads up on the online stores. I'm familiar with them, but was more so trying to narrow down a list of recommended brands to look at.

So far on the top of the list is the ground effect sputniks for $100ish.
Has anyone used the pearl izumi quest shorts (the cheapest entry level one)?
I hope to get a few more recommendations of shorts that you guys like around the $100 mark.

I have a couple of pairs of the Quest shorts, seemed like good quality for what I paid for them. Don’t wear them outside anymore as they have become see through at the front, they arrived at this condition faster than I would have expected compared to older shorts I own.
I like Ftech bib shorts, the local distributor had some big specials on recently, very comfy with long legs unlike some others, made in Italy as well.

Quest are fine for shorter rides, but don't hold their shape particularly well. I use them mainly indoors on the trainer now.
Attack shorts are great for anything longer than about 50km, and you can pick them up $110-120 by searching around. Can't comment on the see through issue and hopefully won't have to!
