Maldon Classic 2022

Postby P!N20 » Sat Nov 13, 2021 11:29 am

Getting in early - looks like the Maldon Classic which was postponed this year will be happening 5-6 March 2022.

Bump.

This is only 8 weeks away, who’s going?

Their Facebook page has been active with the promise of some quality machines, but I should be able to lower the bar somewhat.

Could do. Maybe.
You heard anything about the Beeac one coming back?
Will your Kypo get an outing? I like the one they’ve posted pics of

Nah I haven't. Sounds like it all got too hard with COVID restrictions.

I wanted to take the Kypo up, but my family will be coming with me and I reckon their bikes will be coming as well, which means no room for the Pinarello and Kypo. I'll certainly be keen to talk to the owner of that one - full c-rec, *drool*

Worth noting they're including a 30k or 50k ride on the Sunday, so it's not just all standing around looking pretty. :P

One week after the Ballarat Swap Meet - I'd better get the Camry serviced :|

Life has got busy, but managed to make a start on getting my bike cleaned up to a presentable level. Wheels have been thoroughly cleaned and hubs polished. Next job is to polish the cranks - even got some Campy decals from Mr Softley to bung on them.

Only 3 and a bit weeks away. Anyone else planning on attending?

I'm planning to give it a go. If I make it I'll either be riding a tandem with my wife or on the Blackbird. Blackbird has decrepit black and red paintwork and red Airlites.

I will be there - it's one week after the Ballarat Swap Meet, (I'll see you there BarkMadly  ) but I have a few road trips in me after the Covid mess. Might take the Kenevans - it's presentable but not rideable

I will be there, taking a couple of bikes to show, and one to ride. Looking forward to it!

Ok I’m in. All you fine people plus I’ve just heard from John Rolfe (the son of Herb who made my bike) that he is planning to go.

^ Nice. Making a weekend of it or just the show?

Cranks are polished and decals applied - came up good. Now I can detail the frame and polish the shiny bits. Still toying with polishing up a panto'd seat post I got a while back or just sticking with the one I've got. I'll probably leave it to last and see if I've got time to do it.

Make that a no now, another ride Saturday morning means I'm out Saturday and Sunday was already busy!

^ Bummer. Next year we should aim to get as many Kypos there as possible.

Decided to go with the panto'd seat post because of course I did, so that's done along with the stem and handlebar sleeve. Now I can get stuck into detailing the frame and touching up a few stone chips...and when I say 'stuck into', I mean trying to find snippets of time between work and family duties.

Only a week (and a day) to go!

Actually managed to snag a set of barely used Monoplaner brakes, so hopefully they will land before the show.

Coughed up for a new chain as I was surprised to find the Wippermann 900 9 speed chain I was running had a few rust spots. I've had a few 808 8 speed chains and they've never shown a dot of rust, noting that the 900 and 808 retail for about the same price. The 908 is three times as much.

Frame has been detailed and is looking pretty shiny. I used an Armor-all product that just sprays on and wipes off - heaps easier than trying to cut and polish around components and braze-ons. Got a few stone chips to touch up if I get some time.

If anyone’s still playing, finished off my bike this morning. Brakes arrived, mounted and adjusted.

Thinking I should take it for a quick spin just to make sure I haven’t forgotten to tighten something up before Sunday’s ride.

Bit of rain about later today and tomorrow - what’s the bet it will rain on the way to Maldon.

I’ll be sporting my ‘Classically Trained’ t-shirt, so come and say hi if you see me. Should be a great weekend, can’t wait.

Did you happen to come across a Bugatti(?) that looked like it had a truss style frame system? Saw a pic on FB, looked very cool if perhaps impractical.

I took a photo. Will post when I get some bandwidth. I’ll be riding the Blackbird tomorrow.

Yeah, was wondering what it would be like to ride.

The ride was brutal! Southerly cross wind for most of it with nowhere to hide. Bit of a tail wind in the final stages, but that was also where the course got lumpy. Fun though. I didn't really take any photos, so you'll have to use your imagination.

One of the best things I've see was Charlie Farren on an electric Moulton leading the peloton into the wind!

Great to meet Johnj and see Imwit again. Looking forward to next year.

Great photos Pin20 and great weekend.
I wish I had taken a photo of the polished Pinny shining in the sun today. It was spectacular.
Met John Rolfe and his wife and found out that Peter Campbell bought some of Herb Rolfe’s bike building gear and is still using it today.
Peter built the Faema era Eddy Merckx replica shown above as well as plenty of others on show yesterday.
There was some really nice Paconis around too
