Lidcombe oval grant of lease - important

Postby g-boaf » Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:52 pm

https://haveyoursay.cumberland.nsw.gov. ... lease-2023

This one could have huge impacts to Lidcombe Auburn Cycling Club and the track racing / training. A lot of people train and race there, plenty of kids who start off there in racing. If it's gone, that will no longer happen.

Cumberland Council proposes to lease it to the Wests Magpies Rugby League Club, giving the Wests full control of the facility with no obligation to allow LACC to continue to use the velodrome. LACC and Auscycling lodged objections already.

You need to respond by Friday 15 December (this week).

I know Rugby League is sacred compared to cycling, but this can't happen. :(

The demographic of the area has changed completely since the days when Lidcome Oval was the home ground of Western Suburbs Magpies until they moved to Campbelltown in the late 80s and prior to the merger with Balmain Tigers. Played there a few times myself as a junior and attended lots of matches at the ground.

I don't know the background to the Council proposal but it seems strange given Wests Tigers have a very modern training facility at Concord.

Given there are very few track cycling facilities in Sydney let's hope LACC can still use the track.

Hope is not enough, everyone must make a submission opposing the proposal.

Done. It does seem rather counter-intuitive that the WMRLC, who are based there now, in what seems to be a community success, could exclude other users from operations. Given the developments surrounding and upcoming, losing a community facility is hare-brained to start with. Losing one of the last remaining velodromes and club bases is even more so.
