I use to go when I was young, it always seems to get a good crowd.

Coomealla Mildura Mountainless Bike Club
Maybe surprisingly they have an impressive race schedule. They've also have their own purpose 'built' course for their enjoyment. If only my MTB was still functional
Mildura – Coomealla Cycling Club
Again there's quite a few members and some decent groups getting around the place.

It is still there. I was there racing when it was built. A monument to engineering ineptitude.martinjs wrote:Hey master6, do you know it the old really steep velodrome is still there or did they finally pull it down?master6 wrote:My old club:-

When you say "steep", are you referring to the banking, or the climb up the back straight?
The site was an old rubbish tip, and when excavations began , a large quantity of old bottles was found. I think that work started in the very late 60's.
A local bike shop owner, Mr Tom Ashby, donated the money to build the club house, and that was built around 1972/3.

My memory seemed to recall the banking was quite steep.

The banking was/is quite steep, but walkable. Surface is bitumen. Two problems came up during construction. The Kyneton Shire council and staff did the design and construction, using road making equipment. Road graders could not handle the banking, and kept slipping off the bank, so a bulldozer was used to push the bank up from the inside by following radius lines. Sealing was carried out in a similar fashion by working from the inside and sealing strips up the bank, rather than around the bank. The result was an uneven surface.martinjs wrote:I'm working of memory, spent some time working there a good 20 years ago, and used to visit as my ex girlfriend lived there for a while with my three eldest kids and even that was over 10 years ago now.

The other problem was that rock was discovered at the east end of the track, and the engineering staff decided to build that end higher than the west end facing Mollison Street.
It is a pity that the track was not built on a larger flat site, with perhaps a larger 400metre lap, and less banking.
As a club track, it has served a purpose, however interclub racing at the site was rare. In my view, it would have been a dangerous place for visitors unacustomed to it, and top class riders would have found it impossible.
The Kyneton Amateur Cycling Club is now known as Macedon Ranges Cycling Club, however I am unable to discover their current activities.
Perhaps someone can enlighten us about any racing at the club in 2011. I pass through twice each year and would love to have a race for old times sake.

Probably best known for the Baw Baw classic that is coming up soon. Said to be one of the hardest climbs in the world.
