If you can find a 4600-series Tiagra derailleur, that will take up to 32T, and works on the same pull ratio as your current stuff. 4700 & GRX is derived from 11-sp. and is incompatible. For fitting bigger sprockets you need to look at so-called "9-sp." derailleurs, which work on the correct pull ratio. R3000 Sora will take 34T, while "Shadow" type MTB models will fit 36T comfortably.
Wait you saying this will work with my 5700 shifters? If so massive thanks, because I have a spare 34 cassette in the shed!

Already running 36/46 and 10-42 cassette without issue.
2nd set of wheels is Shimano hub, so will go for the 11-40 or even 11-36 and use them for not so steep rides.
What rear derailleur make/model are you using on 10-42 or 11-40 ?! Please tell me it is for a 9-speed... which is what I need it for.

There is no such beast as a 9-sp.-compatible clutched derailleur.

However the MTB models M2000 Altus, M3000 Acera and M4000/M3100 Alivio derailleurs will allow you to fit up to a 40T, even though the official spec is 36T, and will work with all Shimano 9-sp. shifters.

Hi Duck, me again. Never got around to putting that franken setup before my bike got binned.

Anyway rebuilding with grx and can't seem to find GRX400 band on. Does this thing exist?

As far as I can tell, GRX front derailleurs are only available as braze-on. You'll need a clamp adaptor such as SM-AD10 or AD15 depending on tube diameter. They're not expensive.

Champion as always!

Can I use this one that seems to be the only one that comes in black?

This may be an odd question, and I'm hoping I explain myself correctly.

If a frame has disc flatmounts designed for 160mm disc/calipers, is it POSSIBLE that there is an adaptor that will allow a 160mm flatmount caliper to fit with a 140mm disc ?

I know there are ones that enable a 140mm flatmount to be used with a 160mm caliper/rotor, but want to go the other way.

The flat mount system is normally - but not always - designed for mounting including an offset, reversible adaptor. However if the frame is specifically designed for a particular rotor size, it is not possible to fit smaller.

Cheers. I have to confirm what the frame is made for, but the calipers I’m looking at, Hope RX4, are listed as 160mm Flatmount.

So will see what happens.

Thanks

Unless Hope have done something weird, calipers aren't specific to rotor size, it's the mounting that dictates where they sit.

That’s what I thought, so then would I use this adaptor

https://www.bikebug.com/shimano-flat-mo ... front.html

I’d frame is setup for 160mm rotor and I want to use 140 rotor ?

If the frame is set up for 160mm, you're using 160mm.

Oh, yeah, the adaptor linked above is for the front, the rear mounts either directly on the frame, or on a shorter wedge-shaped adaptor when using a 160mm rotor on a 140mm-compatible frame.

Hi Duck,

Me again. 10 speed XT, what's the max cassette size? Shimano says 36, I'll assume 38 will work, but most cassettes are 40 or 42

Unofficially they'll take 40T max.

Posting Q for friend in a bind.

Middle ring of a 10sp triple is due for replacement.

Only thing he can find online is a 9sp version.

Any issues ?

I'll presume MTB, because while an option, 3x10 on road is very rare....

Ramping to pick up from the small ring is different due to 9-sp using a 22T vs 10-sp's 24T. Not a huge problem, but may take the edge off that shift a bit.

Cheers. It's a flat bar bike, but yes, MTB cranks.

I reckon he'll cope. Cheers

Can I just swap my SH r7000 50/34 road cranks for a set of SH grx 600 46/30 cranks ?
Any FD or other issues ?

Or can I simply bung on a bigger cassette - currently have a 32t on there.

Looking for lower gearing for some big mountain rides. Not fussed over top speed losses.
