Not a very easy hill, very hot and very rough. Col de Sarenne - second time I’ve ridden this one.

The descent is pretty bad too. Not one to attack.

Finding some shade relief from the burning temperatures near the local SNCF station and plenty of cool Orangina. ;)

Not mine, but spare bikes that could be borrowed in emergency. LaPierre and pretty nice spec. Mavic people are just great, top notch professional mechanics.

They also had an old rim brake yellow Canyon Aeroad CF SLX there with one guy riding it. 52-36 and 11-28 on that 11 speed Ultegra bike. I’ve ridden one of those before, knew what it was - nice bike but hard work if you don’t have a lot of power.

Replaced the bottle cages with the correct ones used by Team Sunweb:

One of the red S-Works cages got broken on the way back from France.

Hope your recovery is going alright and the insurers are playing nicely.

I went out and did an afternoon ride, rather rare on weekday afternoons but I didn't feel like doing Zwift.

Apart from nicks and scuffs on the group and wheels, this is probably the worst of it.

Headtube ovalised from the fork steerer pushing out when the front wheel made contact with the car, note the paint cracks which wasnt from any contact with anything.

I thought I'd bring the Canyon out for the first time in a few years. I had forgotten how different it is - windy conditions don't bother it. But the brakes are quite different. Modern disc brakes are a lot better. ;)

Best thing I like is the stealthy look to this bike. I have a black collar for the quadlock mount, forgot to change it over.

Day 2 with my new purchase. 2020 Specialized Roubaix Comp with Di2. The DT Swiss alloy wheels definitely need to go, but otherwise the ride is awesome. Coming from a 2014 Trek Domane, it is a big change. My first roadie with disc brakes.

Look at their phone instead of where they are driving. Very commonplace :x
Or just not pay sufficient attention. Even more commonplace.

I have alloy dt swiss, i find they spin up quick are only 1500 gms and bomb proof.
A lot of money to go carbon and save 100 gms i decided

They don't need to be that expensive.
A decent set is significantly faster ime. Raced tts with an 85mm front and disc rear. You don't need to go that deep though.

How deep for an all round wheel set , climbing, windy days etc, 40 mm ?.
Will that make me so much quicker, for how many $.
I dont race, and spending 1400 plus for those gains.. well not for me
Now if my bike came with carbon wheels, i would be very pleased, but alas, alloy will have to do this tight arse

I ride 50mm on road everywhere. Occasionally 58mm when I ride the older non-tubeless bike.
The 50mm prime rr50 v3 wheels have about 25k km on them and were about $800 for the set.
No probs with wind. Yes you do notice the extra speed. More evident the harder you push.
If you are happy that is all that counts though.

Carbon rims aren't just about light weight and going fast, they have other handling differences compared to aluminium rims. On the straight, flat, smooth & upright, for a given rim shape there is little difference. But start throwing the bike at corners, carbon's lower lateral flex makes the wheels track better, so you get a more direct feel of the bike's handling. But on the flipside carbon, due to its composite layup, will give a smoother ride over surface imperfections vs a similar aluminium rim; the epoxy resin component of the layup has a bit of compressibility to absorb small impacts/vibrations that transfer straight through aluminium, and that takes a lot of the "sting" out. They won't necessarily make you much quicker over a ride (several other things affect that too), but you'll more often than not feel better both on and after the ride with carbon rims.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks for the replies people, it is making me think.
So in an area that is hilly and it's fair share of rain ( Malaysia) Is braking about the same as especially in wet.

If using rim brakes, carbon is noticeably inferior to alumonium, especially in the wet. Improvements to brake pad compounds and rim surface treatments have closed the gap in recent years, but it remains the one area where carbon is not as good. Disc brakes completely remove that variable.
