Malvern Star: Help ID this bike

Postby racingdown » Sat May 28, 2022 12:49 am

I need to source a part to repair this bike and I'm hoping someone can help ID the model/year. Thanks.

Welcome outside. Unfortunately google drive is virtually impossible to hotlink, so I have changed your image to a url link.

Looks to be a run of the mill early 80s bike. What part do you need?

I'm on the lookout for a back axle.

Is there anything special about it? It looks like fairly standard solid axle, similar to what is still used on many low end bikes today. Should be available for not a lot of money at just about any local bike shop.

I got a different story this week when I tried to get it repaired. They said it wasn't standard anymore and that I'd need to track it down.

That sort of axle hasn't been standard on mid range bikes since the 80s, but as uart said it continues to be used on low end bikes today, eg Reid classic.

Either the bike shop you spoke to doesn't know that or they're giving you the old brush off. Either way I'd be be steering well clear of them.

The axle is most likely to be 3/8 x IIRC 135mm like this one

I'd suggest that f_b has mis-typed the axle length. The inner dimension of the dropouts is likely to be 126mm you'd then need to add another 10-15mm just to be flush with the outside of the frame, and then another 25-30mm for nuts and washers, so the length would be at least 175mm. There is no particular drama with a nutted axle being too long. This one might be better.

Cheers,

Cameron
