Larger Cassette on CRX four?
Postby Billy22Bob » Mon Nov 07, 2022 3:52 pm
I have a 28-38-48 on the front with 700x28's
In a desire to get up hills better I was looking at a 11-30T or preferably a 11-32T cluster running off the 28 = 0.93 Ratio or 0.88.
Much better than the current 1.08
I'm fairly new to this - but being an engineer at heart - I like to delve into the options.
I have a photo that shows max and minimum derailleur swing. But cant work out how to post it on this forum
Given the 32T would be another 6T=3", and the derailleure is way extended,
I'm guessing Id need another 6 links in the 108L chain.
Will the current hanger achieve this?
Questions
1. Can I squeeze a 30T onto this bike?
2. Maybe a 32T?
3. Would I go for a 114L chain - probably time for a new one.
Thoughts appreciated.

4. Would you call that a Medium Cage?
Front Chain rings 28-38-48 - Rear are 13-26
Newbie.......Doing one calc indicates (48-28)+(26-13) = 33 - yet derailleur looks well extended

You don't need to add 6 extra links for a 6 tooth jump (remember that just under half of the links actually engage the large rear cog). I'd add either 2 or 4 links.Billy22Bob wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2022 3:52 pmGiven the 32T would be another 6T=3", and the derailleure is way extended,

BTW. What front rings are you on in those photos? You need enough length to just make sure that you can't bust anything if you accidentally cross chain big-big, but if small-small is a bit loose and rattly it's not really a problem (I just think of it as a gentle reminder not to cross chain when my small-small combination starts rattling with a loose chain).

Copy that - thanku -
crosscheck here
https://www.greenwich-market-trader.co. ... p?ITM=9336
"Maximum Sprocket: 26T; Smallest Sprocket: 11T"
.....after some reading - I suspect I also have a "Standard Mount Hanger - Dropout 266"
So...Do I move to the front 28-38-48 and see if I can put on a 24 on there? (Newbie question)
OR
What rear would suit?.....
something like this? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/28493401150 ... Fw62LYQ</a>

I paid 90 bucks for this bike - mind u it is in pristine condition
Currently
TY300_RD + (13-32)Cass + 106LChain /wlink + chain tool = 23+25+16 = 64 (+10 tool)

Hi Duck. I've heard that with Shimano stuff you can usually get away with +2 tooth count over the official limit. Would be the case here, would it be worthwhile the OP trying a 30T and seeing if they can get it running satisfactorily for their purposes.

Newer-series stuff has a bit more tolerance, however older-model stuff such as the OP's 2200 is true to its stated maximum. I had a similar-vintage 3300 Sora on my commuter bike that barely cleared a 23T when its mount-pivot spring wore out!
Important thing to point out is the derailleur in that example is a much newer model with very different geometry to more traditional designs, and even in "short" form is a relatively big derailleur. I didn't watch the whole clip, but as soon as I saw what model he was using, I know it works. That derailleur will actually fit up to a 36T rear sprocket, but due to the amount of chain slack the cage can take up, chainring range would need to be reduced to a maximum 14T difference.Billy22Bob wrote: Duck,

Q....would a 11-34T cassette work with this derailleur - reminder my front is 28-38-48 (20T range) = 43T total
Q2....that particular derailleur says 6-7speed - just like to confirm it will do 8 speed. I know the listing says 8 but the decal on the unit says 6/7
Q3....going from a 13-26T (13T) cassette to a 11-34T (23T) =+10T = how many xtra chain links ...5L????
Q4....I'm guessing I should repack the bearing whilst I'm at it - yes?
Q5....do I need to also buy a B-Link to fit this or will it fit my current standard mount?
