No doubt someone in Shimano quality control is feeling pretty cranky right now.

(Yes, I know, the door's *that* way.......)

All cranks I believe but the recall only applies to US and Canada (currently).

The fine print reads:
CPSC recall wrote: Only owners of cranksets showing signs of bonding separation or delamination during the inspection will be provided a free replacement crankset and installation.

I wonder what statute of limitations is on this? If yours don't delaminate for another 2 years, are you still in line for a free replacement? No idea.
Are owners of cranks that have been binned and replaced in line for anything? I'm guessing not.

I'm not surprised it began in the US, but will undoubtedly extend. The EU is already making noises about it. It should extend worldwide at some point.

The old "have a recall in the most litigious country and hope nowhere else catches on" trick. It may have worked before the internet.

The recall is global. From the Shimano document: "The corrective action is global, but implementation varies by region based on specific requirements and dates"

Australian info here ... https://bike.shimano.com/en-AU/informat ... ogram.html

"If your crankset has one of these production codes, we will inspect your crankset without charge, and if your crankset shows bonding separation, you will be provided with a free replacement crankset.

The timing of the inspection and other details will be announced on this website in the near future. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your patience and cooperation."

Long, long overdue, and now they have done something it's woefully inadequate. It should be a replacement of all cranks because there is very little warning before they let go. To say nothing of compensating the many people who have already had cranks fail and been told to take a long walk off a short jetty.

The specific models affected are the 11-speed compatible Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000 and Dura-Ace FC-R9100 chainsets, as well as the FC-R9100P power meter variant.

It affects products manufactured prior to 2019, with one of the following two-letter production codes on the rear of the crank arm.
KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE, and RF.

Shimano's 105 chainsets are not affected by the recall, due to a cold-forged manufacturing process. Likewise, no 10-speed or 12-speed components are affected either.

Although the recall currently only applies to North America, speaking to Cyclingnews, a Shimano spokesperson has confirmed that the safety inspection and replacement program will be echoed in markets worldwide. Therefore it is advised that affected users outside of North America also follow the advice, stop using the affected part, and wait for an announcement in your area.
A worldwide helpline will also go live at 9 a.m. (CEST) tomorrow (Friday 22 September) which consumers can use to ask related questions.

That is quite a lot of people affected.....

Seriously though, although on face value 4500-odd reported failures is a significant number, as a proportion of nearly 800,000 units just in North America, that is well under 1%. So yeah, if you have one of the affected cranks, get it checked out, but the probability of it having a problem is in reality very very low.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

So glad I have SRAM instead of Shimano quality...

That said, I do have a Dura-Ace FC-R9100P crankset on my Canyon so I will be checking that carefully.

Looking at the Shimano site, it makes no mention of 175mm, but rather says you should check the production code and model number. So if you have 172.5mm, you should still be checking it carefully. :!:

As to why they insist on making crappy alu cranks it's beyond me...how is alu a premium product from ultegra level and above??
Stiff, light, don't crack like carbon .....oh wait.

Hahaha yeah....
The problem with carbon cranks isn't so much a tendency to crack, it's the aluminium thread inserts' tendency to debond from the carbon arms and potentially tear out. I've seen many more examples of that failure mode (across several manufacturers) than these debonded Shimano cranks. I love carbon, in its place, but cranks aren't the right place for the stuff.

You'd have seen more than I. I've not heard of any carbon crank failures. I did see one poor bugger with a snapped dura ace crank on the alpine classic a few years back though.
I'll stick with my 105 chainsets, the care factor for a few grams isn't there for me.

I liked the poking sh it at aluminium though, thrown back the same stuff that is said of carbon. :)

From my understanding is that is 4500 crank failures that were reported to the CPSC, so there are most likely a lot more failures in the field.

I haven't checked but almost definitely my DA 9100 cranks are in the recall. I don't really like the inspection and if everything is ok, they don't replace them. Seems like any crank in the time period could crack and just because they haven't at the time of inspection doesn't mean that they are safe. I would much prefer them to replace all affected cranks.

Even then the replacement 12sp cranks are made using the same principles, it would be nice to get info on what changed in design / manufacture to prevent future failures.

Shimano 12 speed cranks supposedly have a plug in the hollow axle to prevent water ingress from the non drive side. That's... it.

Except there’s nothing wrong with the aluminum, it’s the “glue” that’s failed.
