Big thanks to LG for providing the above images of the 1940 race program.

Mostly Victorian riders with a sprinkling of interstate visitors and some upstart C. Walker from the USA.

Wondering if Bates was related to the framebuilders of the same name.

There's a C. Beasley of Footscray in the Altona Stakes, possibly related to the Beasley Bikes family.

Love the Fosters ad - people probably actually drank it back then.

Altona Stakes didn't start until 10:40, way past my bed time.

C Beasley is Clinton, a son of John Joseph "Jack" who founded Beasley Cycles and middle brother of John who rode in the Tdf. Their elder brother Vin was also a good cyclist.

That was a strong race program - Herb Guyett (brother of Billy), Bill Morritz, Eddie Smith (not that Eddie - he was only 14 at the time). There were a few missing though, most notably Billy Guyett & Keith Thurgood.

The Sporting Globe had almost a full page on the meet. One little titbit was that the race was the last at which booze could be consumed at the track

V. Beasley of Abbotsford was also in the line up.

Thanks for posting the pics P!N. A couple Tasmanians in there, Les Grubb did well in the previous Wednesday's results.

Late post. Feel pretty sure that's my Dad, Les Bradley, on the wheel of the lead rider. He rode around that time. Looks like a tricky support to win from!

Also have a Bates track bike with the name Ken Bradley on the top tube and note the resemblance to the name in the above posts. Anyone know the name?

Any relation?
No, timing is out. He was born in 1939.

Anyone any closer to working out what that trip was he was posing with?

Just confirming the 'Bates - Ken Bradley' frame is probably a fair bit later than 1939, it's nervex lugged, I would have thought late 50s into the 60s.
