Our Sydney round table was a huge success with many great ideas being shared from a range of extremely diverse groups.
Melbourne is scheduled for September; Adelaide for November and Brisbane for October.
EOI's for Melbourne and Adelaide have already been solid so if you are keen you need to let us know so that you do not miss out.
QLD people, if you work in advocacy or are keen to discuss cycling issues in your state then you need to let us know via our EOI page.

Just wanted to clarify that these round tables are not to discuss sports cycling issues.
They are effectively discussions around advocacy, infrastructure and safety for cyclists.
While we are happy to have representatives of any style of cycling group attend, we want people to be clear on what it is that they are attending.

For those of you who are interested in what happened at our Brisbane roundtable hosted by Di Bella Coffee Roastery yesterday, it was a slightly different discussion to what we have already seen in NSW (and what we expect to see in Victoria and other states) because for the most part the attendee's were all dealing with the same stakeholders being Brisbane City Council and to a lesser degree Transport and Main Roads. In other states each of the attendees is likely to be interacting with a separate council and each of these councils have their own specific nuances and issues. As a result we ended up hearing very similar issues from yesterdays individual groups which led our discussions in a different direction to what we will see outside of QLD.
Attendees aspired to:
- normalise cycling
- equalise age and gender
- make it feel safe to ride
The groups agreed that to strengthen their positions moving forward the following was needed:
- An insurance mechanism.
- To work as an alliance (whilst retaining each of their individual identities).
- An over-arching organisation to provide support and resources to each of the individual groups
- To follow a version of London Cycling’s “Space for Cycling” campaign
*reduction of speed limits in Urban areas
*safer routes for schoolchildren
*create areas without through motor traffic
*protected space on main roads/major junctions
*safe cycle routes via parks and canals
*liveable town centres
*remove parking in bikelanes
It is Cycle’s intention to create this necessary insurance mechanism for the Bicycle User Groups, (and we have already had informal agreement to provide this). We also already have the support of similar groups in other states and believe that ultimately through these alliances, and through allowing each of these groups to retain their own unique identities), we will provide a peak body that truly represents the voice of everyday cyclists.

Well done for what you have tried to achieve here.
I did take a look at the very diverse list of attendees for this roundtable and thought it might be difficult to get any consensus.

While all of these groups do have their differences there is also common ground being cyclist safety and more livable urban environments as detailed above.elantra wrote:Well done for what you have tried to achieve here.

Keep in mind we are not trying to mould any of these groups into following our particular mantra or taking away their individual identities but we (and they) see the benefit of having a larger, better organised voice.
