QUEENSLAND ROAD RULES FOR CYCLISTS
Postby beauyboy » Sat Aug 30, 2008 11:45 am
As this keeps coming up here is the link to the Queensland Transport page on the road rules that apply to cyclists that are different or special compared to other road users.

Interesting roundabout laws? they terrorise me, is it best to stay left of the lane or assume the position of a car untill through them?

In my experience it is much safer to get into the centre lane and act like a car i.e. take the lane. Having to give way to a vehicle coming up behind you that can legally cut in front of you is an accident waiting to happen.Mustang wrote:Interesting roundabout laws? they terrorise me, is it best to stay left of the lane or assume the position of a car untill through them?

Yes I whole heartly agree that law is completely stupid and gives some knowable bogon the right to run a cyclist off the road.
This is one of the laws that the CBD BUG wish the government to have amended.
That said Multi-lane roundabouts in many cases are just plain dangerous. Give me a single lane roundabout or a lighted intersection.

Do I need to keep my head light at a certain angle between the front fork and the road? I've got a new Lezyne light and it is really bright. I'm afraid I'll blind drivers/other cyclists with it.

If the light is shining where it's supposed to (on the ground so you can see where you're going), you shouldn't have a problem. I've got over 600 lumens coming out the front of my bike. Probably 90% of that light is pointed between 2m-15m in front of me. Only a tiny fraction makes it into the eye level of a motorist or other cyclist/pedestrian. And that tiny fraction lets them see where I am.

After 4 years I think Stevejb87 has probably figured it out by now.

Generally, I take the lane when going through a roundabout.
1) you are going the same speed if not quicker than a car if you are at pace
2) If you stay left a car is sure to see that as an invitation to pass
3) There would be a chance that a car behind you will expect you to give way if they want to turn left
4) Cars nearly always cut the exit (and into bike lane) when exiting the roundabout
