In stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia from 248km to Mayrhofer im Zillertal (Austria), Michele Scarponi was part of the break away from the breakaway. 45km before the finish, Vasili Kiryenka (Caisse d’Epargne) and Scarponi held the peloton and other breakaway attempts at bay. In the last ten kilometres Kiryenka dropped off with cramps and Scarponi held his lead to take line victory with a 30 second advantage.
During the racing through smaller streets, the peloton split with Lance Armstrong in the second group though not particularly concerned with a time 4:13 minutes behind the leader. For Astana, Levi Leipheimer and Christopher Horner are well placed in the top ten.
Stage 7 is 244km from Innsbruck in Austria across Switzerland to Chiavenna in Italy with a 40km downhill towards the finish line.
