Fabian Cancellara Takes Gold at Mendrisio

Press Release: On the circular route of 16, 6 kilometers in Mendrisio, Switzerland, Team Saxo Bank home favorite, Fabian Cancellara demonstrated his indomitable winner instinct and not least his frantic pace abilities when he crushed all competition during Thursday’s 49, 8 kilometers. He crossed the line taking back his title from 2006 and 2007 in an epic demonstration of style and strength.

The strong Swiss shot through the streets of Mendrisio with an average speed of nearly 53 km/h cutting off every inch possible and majestically lifting his arms from the handlebars crossing the finish line 1.27 minutes faster than his teammate on second place.

Team Saxo Bank’s Swede, Gustav Larsson did an outstanding contre le montre as he conquered the silver medal by trying to keep up with his Swiss teammate after being caught on the course.

“I was absolutely flying on home ground today and I was well aware that it was going to take some hard work to reach my goal so I started out the time trial with everything I had. I’m really glad to regain the World Cup jersey. I have been working hard to reach this condition and it is clear that I also have ambitions regarding the course on Sunday”, told the world champion with a twinkle in his eye.

Tony Martin (Germany) took third place.
