Hutchinson have release an airless tire with a light composite structure that replaces air and tubes. Hutchinson emphasis that it is not a solid rubber tire, rather incorporates a light and strong composite structure covered in the rubber tread.
The research and development was a partnership between Hutchinson and the engineering firm, Biron and is planned for release in late 2010. The new Serenity Airless tires promise the following advantages:

Reduction of waste (no tube, or tire casing to discard)
SERENITY technology not only provides a revolutionary airless tire system, but also reduces waste. Compared to a classic tube + tire system, SERENITY is easier to recycle due to the absence of rim beads. Only the tread is discarded, making the waste material easier to recycle into other rubber related products such as sporting goods.
