SRAM Automatix: Geared Hub shifts automatically

SRAM have released the Automatix, an internally geared 2 speed that shifts automatically and is suited for urban and city bikes. Due for release in August 2011, it is aimed to suit cyclists who travel short distances on their bike and who appreciate the hassle free functionality.

There are no handlebar shifters or cables, rather the speed changes from 1:1 to 1:37 ratio (and back) depending on the speed. The manufacturer who builds this hub onto a bike can order hubs from SRAM with preset shifting points (12, 14 or 18km/h). The 980 gram hub also caters for different sized sprockets and will be available to suit 28 or 36 hole rims.
